Seven fees, three bases
The number that matters is not the percentage but what it is a percentage of. Etsy charges its transaction fee and Offsite Ads on the pre-tax order, processing on the order including tax, and the listing fee per unit rather than per order.

Four things worth checking on any page you compare this against
Shipping is in the base
All three percentages apply to the shipping you charge. A calculator that takes the item price alone understates a $28 sale with $4.50 shipping by about 44¢.
Tax is in one base
Processing is 3% of the total including sales tax; the other fees are not. At 7% tax on $32.50 that is 7¢ a sale the calculators that ignore tax miss, and $5.46 a month at 80 orders.
One listing fee per unit
Sell three of one listing and you pay 60¢ in listing fees, not 20¢. Multi-quantity sellers are the ones most calculators understate.
12% is for life
Once a shop passes $10,000 in trailing-365-day sales, Offsite Ads is mandatory at 12% even if sales later fall. The threshold counts item prices only, after discounts, not shipping.

What Etsy sellers ask about fees
How much does Etsy take from a sale?
For a US seller: 20¢ to list, 6.5% of the item plus shipping, and 3% + 25¢ of the item, shipping and sales tax. On a $28 item with $4.50 shipping and 7% tax that is $3.61, about 11.1% of what the buyer paid before tax. An order attributed to an Offsite Ad adds 12% or 15% of the item plus shipping on top.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?
Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee, the 3% processing fee and any Offsite Ads fee are all calculated on the shipping you charge as well as the item price. Offering free shipping and raising the price changes nothing about the total fee.
Are Etsy fees charged on sales tax?
Only the payment processing fee. Etsy collects and remits US sales tax itself, and the 3% + 25¢ is taken on the total the buyer paid including that tax. The transaction fee and Offsite Ads fee are on the pre-tax amount. The calculator asks for your tax rate for exactly this reason.
What is the Etsy Offsite Ads fee?
15% of the order, or 12% once your shop has made $10,000 in any trailing 365 days, charged only on orders placed within 30 days of a buyer clicking an ad Etsy paid for on Google, Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest. Below $10,000 you can opt out; above it the 12% rate is mandatory for the life of the shop. It is capped at $100 an order.
Why is the listing fee charged more than once?
Because a listing renews every time a unit sells. Sell three of a listing in one order and Etsy charges 20¢ for the original listing plus 20¢ for each of the two extra units. Listings also renew at 20¢ when they expire after four months, and on auto-renew.
Is Etsy Plus worth $10 a month?
As a fee, no: it includes $3 of listing credit and $5 of ads credit, so it nets $2 a month only if you would have bought both anyway. Its value is the shop customisation and restock-request features. The calculator nets the credits you would actually use against the subscription.
Are these fees the same outside the US?
No. Payment processing is 4% + 20p in the UK, 4% + 30¢ in the euro area, and 3% or 4% + 25¢ in Canada and Australia depending on the buyer’s location, and nine countries carry a regulatory operating fee from 0.05% to 1.97%. This page models a US seller with a US bank account only.
Etsy is rarely the only place you sell
