What TikTok Shop actually takes from a $50 sale

A pair of earrings sells on TikTok Shop for $50. The buyer pays $50. You don’t get $50.

You get $47 if nobody promoted it. You get $39.50 if a creator did, at a 15% commission. If the buyer sends it back, you lose the sale and TikTok keeps 60 cents of the fee it already charged you.

That’s the whole fee structure in three sentences.

The rest of this post is where the numbers come from, and where they catch people out. We’ve watched a lot of Etsy sellers add TikTok Shop this year, and the fee page is never the thing that surprised them.

The referral fee is 6%, and it’s the only fee on the sale itself

TikTok Shop US charges a referral fee on every completed order. Since 31 October 2024 the rate is 6% for almost every category. Five jewellery sub-categories (diamond, gold, jade, platinum, and ruby, sapphire and emerald) pay 5%. Pre-owned goods pay 5%, and collectibles pay 3% on any part of the price above $10,000. Those rates are on TikTok’s own referral-fee page, and the seller terms say TikTok can change them with an email.

The fee is worked out on what the buyer paid, less tax. If you run a coupon, the fee is on the discounted price, not the list price.

There’s no listing fee, no monthly subscription and no per-order transaction fee. Etsy charges $0.20 to list, then 6.5% of the price plus shipping, then 3% plus $0.25 to process the payment. eBay takes 13.6% of the total, shipping and sales tax included, plus $0.40 an order on most categories. Next to those, 6% flat is the cheapest checkout of the marketplaces we connect to. It’s also why Etsy to TikTok Shop is the pairing we see added most often.

That’s the case for it. Here’s the case against.

Where the money goes after the sale

Creators. TikTok Shop runs on affiliate videos. You set the commission and creators pick your product up or don’t. There’s no minimum. The fee guides that track this put typical commissions at 10–15%, and we’d plan on that. This is the real cost of selling here. A 15% commission on the $50 earrings is $7.50, more than double the referral fee.

Returns. When an order is refunded after it ships, TikTok keeps 20% of the referral fee it charged, capped at $5 per SKU. On our earrings that’s $0.60. Small, but it’s taken on top of the lost sale, and it applies to every refunded unit. Cancel before shipping and there’s no fee.

Getting paid. Withdrawals to a bank account cost $0.05 each. Withdrawals to PayPal cost 0.9% of the amount. The minimum payout is $2. There’s no separate payment-processing line on a US order. The referral fee is the only fee on the sale.

Fulfilled by TikTok. If TikTok stores and ships for you, fulfilment starts at $4.28 a unit for anything under 4 oz and about $4.70 for 8–12 oz. Storage is free for 60 days, then $0.03 per cubic foot per day. Those are the January 2026 rates, per Printify’s fee breakdown; the rate card changes, so check Seller Center before you send stock in.

Ads. Optional, and a floor of $50 a day per campaign or $20 a day per ad group if you turn them on.

The one that surprises people

Shipping. TikTok offers buyers free shipping on eligible orders, and sellers have reported discounts and shipping incentives being applied to their listings without an opt-in, with the cost deducted from the payout. One seller on the Shopify forum put it plainly in October 2024: “I believe TikTok charges an 8% referral fee and handles the payment processing too (say 3%)”. He was wrong about both numbers, and that’s the point.

The fee card is simple. The payout statement isn’t. Most sellers only find out what shipping cost them when the money arrives, days after the order.

Read your first three payout statements line by line.

That’s where you learn your real fee rate. Not on the fee page.

Before you list

TikTok’s catalogue rules cost time rather than money, but they’ll stall a launch if you don’t know them. Every listing needs a category, its category attributes, at least one image at 300×300, and both a package weight and dimensions. Titles must be 25 characters or more. A new seller can publish 100 products a day; anything past that waits for tomorrow. We check all of that before we send a product to TikTok, because TikTok rejects the listing otherwise, and a rejected listing is a day lost.

Worked example, two ways

The same $50 earrings, sold twice in one day, once on Etsy and once on TikTok Shop.

Etsy TikTok Shop
Listing $0.20 $0
Marketplace fee 6.5% = $3.25 (on the item; shipping would be charged too) 6% = $3.00
Payment processing 3% + $0.25 = $1.75 $0
Creator commission none 15% = $7.50
You keep $44.80 $39.50 (or $47.00 with no creator)

Etsy’s figures are from its fees policy and its US payments policy; eBay’s from its selling fees page. Both were checked on 26 September 2026.

If you sell the same stock on both, the fee question is the easy part. The hard part is the pair of earrings that sells on both within the same hour. TikTok tells us about a sale the moment it happens, so a QuickSync seller’s Etsy count drops before the second buyer reaches checkout. Etsy doesn’t announce sales, so we ask it every five minutes, and the other direction is that much slower. Either way you don’t sell the last pair twice.

The short version

  • 6% on the sale for most categories, 5% for fine jewellery and pre-owned, 3% on collectibles over $10,000.
  • Nothing to list, nothing monthly, nothing per transaction.
  • Creators cost more than TikTok does. Budget 10–20%.
  • Refunds cost 20% of the fee you already paid, up to $5 a unit.
  • Read the payout statement. Shipping and discounts show up there, not on the fee page.

If TikTok Shop is your second or third channel, we keep the stock count matched across all of them. Start 14-day trial, no credit card.
