You sold a $4 trading card. Now you need to get it to the buyer without spending most of the sale on postage, and without losing the card in the mail.
That’s exactly what eBay Standard Envelope is for. eBay says it can save you up to 70% compared with USPS First Class Mail, and every envelope comes with tracking and shipping protection. The catch is a strict set of rules on price, size, thickness and what you can put inside.
This guide covers all of it: the 2026 rates, the envelope requirements, what you can ship, how to set it up step by step, how to pack cards so they pass, tracking, claims, and when to use something else. Everything was checked against eBay’s help pages in October 2026.

What is eBay Standard Envelope?
eBay Standard Envelope is a low-cost US shipping option for small, flat items such as trading cards, coins and stamps. It costs $0.82 to $1.40, covers items that sell for $20 or less and weigh up to 3 oz, and includes tracking and up to $20 of shipping protection.
Before it existed, sellers mailed cheap items in a plain white envelope with a stamp, which meant no tracking and no way to prove delivery. eBay Standard Envelope keeps the low letter price but adds a tracked label, which eBay says can help improve your seller ratings. It works for buyers anywhere in the US, including territories such as Puerto Rico.
eBay Standard Envelope rates in 2026
You pay by weight, up to 3 oz:
| Weight | Price |
|---|---|
| Up to 1 oz | $0.82 |
| Up to 2 oz | $1.11 |
| Up to 3 oz | $1.40 |
Weigh the packed envelope, with everything inside, on a kitchen or postal scale before you print the label, and round up to the next ounce.
You may still see $0.78, $1.07 and $1.36 quoted online, including on eBay’s own Seller Center page. Those are the older rates. The help page above has the current ones.
eBay Standard Envelope requirements: size, weight and thickness
Your envelope has to go through USPS letter sorting machines, which feed mail through rollers. That’s why the rules are strict. If an envelope doesn’t meet them, it may come back to you, or the buyer may have to pay postage due.

- Size: no smaller than 3.5 x 5 inches and no larger than 6.125 x 11.5 inches. A standard #10 envelope fits.
- Thickness: the same thickness all over, under 0.25 inch at every point, and not too rigid.
- Weight: up to 3 oz.
- Material: no plastic. The envelope can’t be made of plastic or wrapped in it.
- Closures: no clasps, strings or buttons.
- Address: parallel to the longest side.
- Item price: $20 or less, not counting tax.
eBay has a free envelope template you can print to check yours, and sells branded trading card envelope kits made for the service.
What you can ship, and how much per envelope
eBay Standard Envelope only works in certain categories: trading cards, coins and paper money, postcards, stamps, patches, stickers and decals, greeting cards, and seeds. Some have extra limits per envelope:
| Category | Allowed per envelope | Not allowed |
|---|---|---|
| Trading cards | Up to 24 raw cards, or up to 2 cards in top loaders | Graded cards |
| Coins and paper money | Up to 5 raw coins or notes, or up to 3 in flips or holders | Rolls of coins, graded items, bullion |
| Stamps and postcards | Up to 10 stamps or 3 postcards; plate blocks that fit | Coils, sheets, graded stamps |
If the option doesn’t appear on your listing, the category is usually the reason. eBay only offers it in these categories.
How to use eBay Standard Envelope, step by step
- List in an eligible category and price the item at $20 or less.
- Set the package details. Enter a weight of 3 oz or less and envelope-sized dimensions. eBay’s Seller Center notes the option shows up when the item fits in a package smaller than 11 x 6 x 1 inches.
- Choose eBay Standard Envelope in the shipping section of the listing.
- When it sells, print the label from eBay Labels and stick it on the envelope. You must use an eBay label; stamps alone won’t add tracking.
- Pack it so it stays flat, flexible and under 0.25 inch (see the next section).
- Mail it. Drop it at a post office, in a blue USPS box, or in your own mailbox. No counter scan is needed; the tracking on the label confirms you shipped.
If one buyer buys several cards from you, you can send them together, and protection rises to $50 on combined orders. Our guide on how to combine shipping on eBay shows how to set up the discount.
How to ship trading cards with eBay Standard Envelope
Most rejected envelopes fail on thickness or stiffness. This setup keeps a single card safe and machine-friendly:

- Penny sleeve. Slide the card into a soft sleeve to stop scratches.
- Top loader or card saver. Put the sleeved card in one top loader, or a semi-rigid card saver. eBay allows up to 2 cards in top loaders per envelope.
- Seal the opening. A strip of painter’s tape over the top stops the card sliding out and peels off cleanly.
- Add light support if needed. A thin piece of card or an index card helps, but skip corrugated cardboard. The envelope must still bend.
- Use a paper envelope. A #10 or a 4 x 6 inch envelope works. No bubble mailers, which are too thick and count as packages.
Then do the bend test: the packed envelope should flex gently without anything sliding around or creating a bump. If it’s lumpy or stiff, the post office may treat it as a package.
eBay Standard Envelope tracking: what to expect
Tracking works differently from a normal package label, which is why sellers often think something has gone wrong.
- The tracking number starts with ESUS. You and the buyer see it in My eBay, Seller Hub and the buyer’s purchase history.
- There’s no counter scan. The post office can’t scan it in, and eBay doesn’t need it to.
- Scans can be sparse. Updates come from sorting equipment, so some envelopes show few events before delivery.
- PayPal may not recognise ESUS numbers. eBay says to reply with the tracking number and point PayPal to trackmyshipment.co.
eBay’s seller levels and performance standards apply as they do for any order, so ship within your handling time.
Shipping protection and how to file a claim
Every eBay Standard Envelope shipment includes protection for loss or damage: up to $20 on a single order and up to $50 on combined orders. The protection is run by PIP (Parcel Insurance Plan).
If a buyer says their item never arrived, eBay suggests you resolve it with the buyer first, usually with a refund, then claim the loss. The timing rules:
- Wait 30 days before claiming a lost envelope.
- File within 90 days of the date you created the label.
- Claim no more than the item’s sold price.
Have these ready for the claim form: what happened (lost or damaged), your PayPal email, your name and the buyer’s, the tracking number, the eBay item number, a screenshot of the order details, and a screenshot of the buyer’s message or dispute. To check a claim, contact PIP on 1-800-325-7390 or at claims@pipinsure.com.
When not to use eBay Standard Envelope
It’s the right choice for most cheap cards, coins and stamps. Use a regular tracked package label from eBay Labels instead when:
- The item sells for more than $20. It isn’t eligible, and $20 of protection wouldn’t cover it anyway.
- It’s graded. Graded cards, coins and stamps aren’t allowed.
- It’s bulky. More than 2 top loaders, a team bag stack, or anything over 3 oz or 0.25 inch.
- The buyer is outside the US. The service is domestic only.

Selling cards on more than one channel?
Most cards are one of a kind. You have one copy, listed with a quantity of 1. That’s fine on a single marketplace. But many card sellers also list on TikTok Shop, run a Shopify store, or sell at card shows through Square. The moment the same card is live in two places, two buyers can pay for it, and one of them gets a cancellation.
QuickSync links eBay with TikTok Shop, Shopify and Square, and matches each card by SKU. When a card sells on one channel, its stock drops to zero on the others. eBay doesn’t announce sales, so QuickSync checks it every couple of minutes. That leaves a short window on very fast sellers, but it’s far smaller than updating listings by hand. Keep SKUs within 50 characters, eBay’s limit; our guide to what a SKU is explains how to set them up.
