Nothing publishes itself to Shopify or Etsy
Copying a listing from Shopify to Etsy (or the other way) always waits for you to look at it. Stock is the only thing that moves on its own, and only once you have turned it on.
Four things to settle first
Ten minutes of tidying saves the first week of sync from guessing.
We match your Shopify and Etsy catalogues by SKU first and by title second, so the cleanest first sync starts with a code on every product that’s the same in both shops. Etsy listings that share one SKU get flagged as “Multiple same SKU” and sit out until each has its own, so fix those on Etsy before you start rather than after.
Decide which shop holds the right count today. On the first sync we take the figure from the shop you name and correct the other to it; a product that’s 12 on Shopify and 9 on Etsy becomes one number, and you choose which.
Check your options fit Etsy’s two slots. A product sold by size, colour and material on Shopify has to fold down to two on Etsy, and we list the affected products before anything publishes.
Then leave it watching. Nothing is written to either shop until you switch sync on, and the ten minutes above is the only setup. The four steps are at the top of this page.
Two timers, not one
Etsy stock and Etsy orders are checked on different clocks.
Etsy tells us nothing on its own, so we go and look. Stock gets checked every two minutes and orders every five, and which number applies to you depends on what changed rather than on how urgent it feels.
Edit a quantity yourself inside Etsy and your other shops follow within two minutes. Sell something on Etsy and the correction can take five, because a sale only reaches us on the order check. So the five-minute figure is the one to size a buffer against, and the two-minute one is what you’re waiting on during a stock-take.
Once we have the change, applying it is quick: correcting Shopify from an Etsy sale takes under a second. Almost all of the delay is us waiting for Etsy to be asked, not us being slow to act on the answer.
One SKU per listing
Reused SKUs are the thing most likely to stop a sync before it starts.
Etsy sellers reuse SKUs more than anyone, usually for good reasons: the same code across a colourway, or a blank left over from a listing that got duplicated. It’s harmless on Etsy and it’s the one shape we won’t guess at.
If two listings in the same Etsy shop carry the same SKU, we mark them “Multiple same SKU” and leave sync switched off for those items. There’s no safe choice available — two listings claiming one code means two possible stock counts, and picking one silently is how you oversell the other. We’d rather show you the list.
Sort it before you connect and the first sync is clean. Sort it afterwards and it still works; the flagged items simply sit out until each one has a code of its own.
Three options, two slots
Etsy gives a listing two option types. Shopify gives a product three.
A t-shirt that’s size, colour and print on Shopify has nowhere to be all three things on Etsy. Two option types per listing is the ceiling, and it’s the one structural difference between these two shops that a sync can’t paper over — it isn’t a field length or a naming rule, it’s a product that doesn’t fit the shape.
So we stop instead of improvising. A product carrying more option groups than Etsy can hold isn’t exported at all, and every variant on it gets a red flag naming the reason, with the same note in its change log. Publishing two of your three would be worse than the wait: you’d have an Etsy listing selling the wrong thing and no sign of it.
The fix is a decision, not a data cleanup. Fold the least-used dimension into the listing itself — one Etsy listing per print, with size and colour as its two options — and the rest of the catalogue is untouched. Products with one or two option types go across as they are, and this only ever reaches the handful that were three-dimensional to begin with.
Shopify's own app dropped Etsy
Marketplace Connect covers eBay, Amazon, Walmart and Target Plus. Etsy is no longer on that list.
On most Shopify pairings the first thing worth checking is Shopify’s own free app, Marketplace Connect, and we say so on the pages where it applies. Etsy is the exception. Shopify has been retiring Etsy from that app: a new Etsy connection can no longer be made, and merchants already running one have been told development is frozen and Etsy-specific faults are not being fixed.
Worth stating plainly, because most of the advice in circulation predates the change. A guide recommending Marketplace Connect for Etsy was written while it worked, and following it now costs you an afternoon establishing that the option has gone. It is a quick way to date an article on this subject.
So on this pair the field is third-party apps, ours among several, and choosing between them is a real decision rather than a formality. What we would weigh is how each one handles the two Etsy rules further up this page — the SKU that cannot be shared, and the third option type with nowhere to go — because that is where a sync either holds or stops without telling you, and it decides more than the length of a feature list does.

How quickly does Shopify update after something sells on Etsy?
Within five minutes. Etsy has no way of telling us the moment a sale happens, so we check it on a short timer instead. Once we have the sale, correcting Shopify takes under a second. The other direction is much quicker: Shopify tells us straight away. If either shop has an outage, we hold the update and retry until it goes through.
Does Shopify Marketplace Connect work with Etsy?
Not any more. Shopify has been deprecating Etsy inside Marketplace Connect: new Etsy connections are no longer offered, and merchants running an existing one have been told development is frozen, so Etsy faults are not being fixed. The app still covers eBay, Amazon, Walmart and Target Plus. A good deal of published advice continues to recommend it for Etsy, which is the quickest way to spot a guide written before the change.
Can Shopify integrate with Etsy?
Yes, through a third-party app. The two do not talk to each other on their own, and Shopify’s own marketplace app no longer covers Etsy, so something has to sit in between. Not from Shopify, now that Marketplace Connect has dropped Etsy, and not from us past the trial. Several third-party apps run a free tier capped by product or order count, which can be enough for a small catalogue. The one genuinely free route is a CSV export, which copies a catalogue across once and keeps nothing level afterwards.
Do I have to re-list my Shopify products on Etsy?
