How automatic category detection works when exporting products to TikTok?

When you export a product to TikTok, QuickSync automatically tries to find the right category for your product before it goes live. You do not need to manually pick a category for every product. QuickSync first tries to auto-detect the best category using the product’s title and description.

Choosing the correct category matters because TikTok uses it to decide what product details are required and where your listing appears when customers search. If QuickSync finds a valid category, it applies it and moves forward with the export. If it cannot find one, it will use the Default Category you selected when you first set up your TikTok store in QuickSync.

How QuickSync Automatic Category Detection Works #

Here’s how automatic category detection works when exporting products to TikTok using QuickSync.

Step 1: While exporting a product to TikTok, the system silently auto-detects and applies a category.

Step 2: QuickSync calls TikTok’s category recommendation system and sends two things:

  • Your product name
  • Your product description

Step 3: QuickSync reads TikTok’s response and picks the most specific category node available.

Step 4: Before applying the category, QuickSync checks two conditions:

  • The category must have AVAILABLE in its permission status, meaning your shop is allowed to list there
  • The category must not be on the restricted list; some categories, such as medicines, food, and electronics, require additional documents or approval from TikTok

Step 5: If both conditions are met, QuickSync applies the category and moves forward with the export

Step 6: If we don’t find any category, then we use the Default Category mentioned in the Review Settings pop-up.

FAQs #

Q1: Why do my products keep going to the default category instead of the correct one?

There are a few reasons why QuickSync may fall back to your Default Category:

  • Your title or description does not have enough detail – If your product title and description are too short or vague, QuickSync will not be able to detect the right category. To improve this, write clear product titles that include the brand, model, and key attributes. Also, make sure the most important product details are included in the first 160 to 200 characters of your description
  • The category is not available for your shop – If TikTok has not given your shop permission to list in the detected category, QuickSync will not use it and will fall back to your Default Category instead
  • The category is on the restricted list – Some categories, such as medicines, food, and electronics, require additional documents or approval from TikTok before you can list them there. If the detected category falls into this group, QuickSync will use your Default Category as a fallback
  • A connection error occurred– If QuickSync receives an API error or timeout while trying to detect the category, it will retry a few times automatically. If the issue continues after the retries, it will fall back to your Default Category to make sure the export still goes through.

Q2: Does QuickSync detect the category every time I export a product or just the first time?

QuickSync runs the automatic category detection every single time you export a product to TikTok. It does not save the detected category from a previous export and reuse it. Each export goes through the same detection process fresh, so that the most accurate and up-to-date category is always applied to your product.

Q3: Can I manually override the category that QuickSync detects for my product?

Yes. If you feel the category QuickSync has detected is not the right one for your product, you can manually update it before or after the export. To avoid QuickSync detecting the wrong category in the future, make sure your product title and description clearly describe what the product is. The more detail you provide, the more accurate the category detection will be.
