When we create a TikTok listing, we ask TikTok to choose its category from the product’s title and description. Then we fill in the details that category requires, using only what your product already says. Both happen once, when we create the listing. Updates don’t send a category, so a fix you make in TikTok Seller Center stays.
TikTok calls those required details attributes. Older guides call them aspects. Below: how we pick the category, how we fill attributes, what happens when one is missing, and how to get better matches.
How we pick a category
- We send the product’s title and description to TikTok’s category suggestion.
- We take the most specific category TikTok suggests.
- We check that your shop can list in it, and that it isn’t on our list of categories we never pick for you.
- If either check fails, or TikTok returns an error, we use the Default category from your TikTok store’s Review settings.
We ask once per listing. A failed request doesn’t get a second try. The product goes to your default category instead.
With no default category saved, the product doesn’t export at all. The Products page shows Choose a TikTok category until you pick one and sync the product again.
Set your default category
- Open Settings, then the Stores tab.
- Click Manage on your TikTok store, then Review settings.
- Under Default category, search for the category that fits most of your products, and pick it.
- Click Save changes.
Choose with care. Everything TikTok can’t place ends up in this one category, so a poor fit shows on every one of those listings.
How we fill attributes
Each TikTok category has its own required details, such as material or country of origin. Once we know the category, we read its required attributes from TikTok. We refresh that list every 24 hours.
An AI model then suggests a value for each one. It reads your product as it is in your main store, with contact details, links and long numbers taken out:
- the title, and the first 5,000 characters of the description;
- the product type, vendor, tags and categories;
- up to 40 variants, with their option values and country of origin.
We keep a suggestion only when it passes four checks:
- It quotes your product. Every value comes with a short quote from those details, and we check the quote is really there.
- It fits TikTok’s list. Where TikTok offers fixed choices, the value has to be one of them.
- It doesn’t guess safety facts. Batteries, hazards, certifications, warranty, allergens and country of origin get a value only when your product states them.
- It copies ingredients word for word. We fill an ingredients attribute only from an ingredients list in your product details, such as one headed “Ingredients:”. Nutrition values must appear in your description too.
When a detail is missing
If we can’t back a value with your product details, we leave that attribute out and still send the listing. Then it’s up to TikTok:
- TikTok takes it anyway. The listing goes up without that detail. You can add it in Seller Center later.
- TikTok refuses it. The product doesn’t list, and we don’t save it as a TikTok draft either. We email you “TikTok needs a product detail” with the attribute’s name, at most once a week for each one.
- TikTok wants a condition. The status reads TikTok requires a product condition. We can’t choose a condition for you. Create the listing in Seller Center with the same SKU, then sync again.
To fix a refused product, add the real value to it in your main store, such as a line in the description. Use the maker’s information for age, safety, origin or ingredient claims, never a guess. Then open the product on the Products page and click Sync product.
After the listing exists
We set the category, the attributes and the size chart only when we create a TikTok listing. Updates don’t send them. That has two effects:
- Your Seller Center edits last. Change the category or an attribute there, and our next update leaves it alone.
- A better title won’t move a listing. Editing the product in your main store doesn’t change an existing listing’s category. Change it in Seller Center.
One exception. TikTok sometimes starts requiring a new attribute for a category. If it refuses an update because the listing lacks one, we retry that update once with only the missing attribute, when your product details state its value.
Get better matches
- Say what the product is in the title. TikTok chooses from the title and description alone. A one-word title, such as a model name, gives it little to go on.
- Write the facts into the description. Material, size, colour and origin, in plain words, are what we fill attributes from.
- Use real option values. Values such as Small and Red tell us more than one variant with no options.
- Pick a default that fits most products. It catches every product without a usable suggestion.
Common questions
Why do my TikTok products keep going to the default category?
Because TikTok’s suggestion didn’t pass our checks, or there wasn’t one. That happens when the title and description are too vague for TikTok to classify, or when TikTok suggests a category your shop can’t list in. It also happens when the category is on our list of ones we never pick, or when the request fails. We ask once per listing and don’t retry. Change the category in TikTok Seller Center, and our updates leave it alone.
Does QuickSync detect the category every time I export?
No. We pick the category once, when we create the TikTok listing. Updates to an existing listing never send a category, so editing the product’s title or description in your main store won’t move it. Each new listing gets its own suggestion from TikTok. To change an existing listing’s category, edit it in TikTok Seller Center.
Can I change the category QuickSync picked?
Yes, in TikTok Seller Center. QuickSync has no category picker for single products, and it doesn’t need one: we never send a category on updates, so your change stays. For listings we haven’t created yet, the category comes from TikTok’s suggestion. When TikTok can’t place a product, it gets the Default category from your TikTok store’s Review settings.
Why are my TikTok attributes wrong or missing?
We fill an attribute only when your product details back it up: the title, description, product type, vendor, tags and up to 40 variants with their options. Anything those details don’t state, we leave blank, and we never guess safety, ingredient or origin facts. Add the missing facts to the description in your main store before we create the listing. For a listing that already exists, fix the attribute in TikTok Seller Center.
What does “TikTok needs a product detail” mean?
TikTok refused a listing because a required attribute was missing, and we couldn’t find its value in your product details. The email names the attribute. Add the real value to the product in your main store, using the maker’s information for age, safety, origin or ingredient claims. Then sync the product again. We don’t save it as a TikTok draft in the meantime.
